Is College for Everyone?
· While there are exceptions to almost every rule, in today’s society, most individuals could benefit from a college education. This includes attendance at a traditional four year institution or a two year community college or vocational program.
· Some students may decide that attending a four year institution is not in their best interest and with prayer, discussion with parents, and wise counsel, this is a very acceptable response.
· However, in today’s competitive society, I would encourage them to attend a community or junior college to develop a skill or trade.
· This is not an inferior route to attending a four year institution. It’s just an alternate one.
· These students sometimes earn just as much if not more than those attending four-year institutions.
· Four year institutions also have their advantages. The academic, social and professional experience gained during these years can be invaluable.
· In addition, attending these schools provide options for careers that require additional schooling such as dentistry, law, or medicine.
· Again, there are exceptions to almost every rule, but many studies show that earning a degree above a high school diploma significantly increases a person’s ability to earn more over his or her lifetime.
· As a result, individuals are typically better prepared to provide for themselves and their families. They are also often in a better position to do more for the kingdom of God.
· It’s challenging to give attention to service of others, service to ministry, and contribute financially to ministry when your lack of education has lead to debt, an inability to support oneself and one’s family, and a poor quality of life.
