What to do While in a Storm
So, knowing that we all face storms, how should we respond when they occur? Our responses may determine how long the situation lasts, if we face similar challenges again, or how successful we will be at overcoming.
The following are some suggested biblical responses.
1) Focus on God and not the Storm
As individuals blessed with intellect, resources, and other gifts, we have been equipped to prepare and respond to storms. After we’ve done all we can reasonably do however, our responsibility is to trust God and focus on His abilities. Worrying about the situation will only bring about stress and discouragement.
(Matt 6: 25-34;Eph 1:3; Eph 6:10-20;)
In scripture, Peter was able to walk on water by focusing on Jesus. When he began to focus on the storm around him, he began to drown . Sound familiar?
(Matt 14:28-33; Phil 3:12-14)
2) Seek God
When trouble comes in our lives, we often seek to remedy the situation ourselves or to call others to talk about them. Our first response however should be to pray and seek God’s involvement in the situation. The Bible tells
us to acknowledge God in all things and He will direct our paths.
(Prov 3:5-6; Psalm 91:14-16)
3) Take a self-examination
We should examine our hearts and actions to determine whether or not the challenge is the result of personal sin. If so, the appropriate action is to discontinue the sin, ask God’s forgiveness, and begin doing what is right. The
storm may not end immediately, but at least now we are on the right track.
(I John 1:8-9; Gal 6:1)
4) Assess the situation
We should examine the situation to determine whether the storm is a sign from God that we are headed in the wrong direction. It may also be the forces of Satan seeking to prevent us from continuing along the right path.
We may not know if it’s either, but our responsibility is to ask and stay close to God for direction.
(Jonah 1:1-4; I Peter 5:8; Prov 3:5-6)
5) Keep moving
When in a storm we must continue moving, praying, attending church, and other things that please the Lord. As when driving through a natural storm, if we can see enough to continue, we will eventually reach sunlight.
(Heb 10:23-25; Psalm 30:5;Psalm 30:11)
6) Stand still
In the most violent of storms we sometimes can’t see our way. During these times, we must hold onto God and pray He keeps us until the storm passes. After we’ve done all we can (Repented of sin, reversed bad habits, etc.),
we must place our trust in Him. Remember his strength is made perfect when we are weak.
(2 Cor 12:9; Psalm 46; Psalm 27; Pslam 91; Psalm 23)
7) Praise God for the Victory
Praise and worship invites the presence of God. God delights in the praise of his people. Amidst challenging situations honor God for how He has brought you through trouble in the past and how you’re trusting
Him to bring you through the present situation.
Paul and Silas sang hymns while in prison and God brought about their release while also impacting the lives of others. (Acts 16:23-26; Psalm 103:1-5; Psalm 27:14; Prov 18;21)
