The Importance of Family
As I’ve gotten older, I have a greater appreciation for family. Friendships have always been and remain very important to me. However, I have come to realize that friends often come and go, but family members remain.
The family unit is perhaps the most important institution known to man. This structure was established by God and when maintained in accordance with His word, it can be a powerful force of good. As a result, we should work to maintain strong families and nurture these relationships.
Below are just a few biblical examples of why strong family units are important:
1) It is primarily through family that we ensure generations come to know and worship God.
In the book of Deuteronomy, believers were instructed to teach upcoming generations the commandments of God and to share with their children their experiences with the Lord. There is no better gift we can give to our children and lineage than to introduce them to the greatest Being in all of existence. It is through this relationship that they will inherit eternal life, become their best selves, can discover their God-given destinies and best serve the remainder of mankind.
2) Family members support during difficult times
One of my favorite scriptures is Proverbs 17:17 which reads, A friend loveth at all times and a brother
is born for adversity. The second half of this scripture highlights how we are blessed with family to help
us through challenging times in life.
3) Family members help us discover our God-given destinies
God often uses family to encourage us down the paths of life, He would have us take. In scripture,
it is Mordecai who encourages Esther to become the queen God has called her to be. Also, Elizabeth and Zacharias are the ones who help prepare John the Baptist for his life of ministry. Even Joseph’s brothers’ mistreatment of him and selling of him into slavery helped propel him into his destiny as a leader of Egypt.
So for these reasons and more, it’s important to work to maintain strong family units and relationships. This can be done through a number of ways such as holiday meals, attending important family events, and by simply keeping in contact with one another from time to time. Of course, we can likely all improve in this regard, but it’s important to always work at it.
